  2. silicate minerals with an internal structure 
  3. based on double chains of silicon and oxygen, 
  4. and with a general formula X2Y5Si8O22(OH)2; 
  5. closely related to pyroxene. Amphiboles form 
  6. orthorhombic, monoclinic, and triclinic 
  7. crystals. Amphiboles occur in a wide range of 
  8. igneous and metamorphic rocks. Common 
  9. examples are hornblende (X=Ca, Y=Mg, F, A) 
  10. and tremolite (X=Ca, Y=Mg).
